CPSC Releases Baseball Safety Study

 

"We want kids to play outside in the sunshine, not inside in a hospital emergency room," said CPSC Chairman Ann Brown.

The United States Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) announced today that safety equipment for baseball could help significantly reduce the amount and severity of Fifty-Eight thousand (or almost 36 percent of) baseball-related injuries to children each year.

 

While Title IX does leave decisions up to the schools, it also creates an atmosphere where there is an obvious team that will go.  Women’s sports are not cut.  Men’s teams are often cut.  The main reason for cutting the teams is because of numbers.  There are too many males.

Athletics is an integral part of college life that fits into the full academic and social atmosphere of at the College of Eastern Utah.  Intercollegiate athletics is secondary to learning, academic achievement, intellectual growth and the primary mission of higher education.

East Mississippi Community College is a member of the National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA). Intercollegiate athletic competition is offered in 8 varsity sports.

The College is located in the scenic corridor of hills and valleys of Southeast Tennessee, Cleveland State Community College  presents an attractive atmosphere in which to enjoy varied facets of campus life .

Nick Senter, executive director of the Dixie Baseball League, an organization based in eleven Southern states, and Richard Bancells, trainer of the Bawhat safety equipment could prevent such injuries. the Commission also studied voluntary safety standards and reviewed published scientific literature evaluating currently available protective equipment.

 

CPSC analyzed the eighty eight reports it received of baseball-related deaths of children between 1973 and 1995. It found that 68 of the deaths were caused by ball impact and 13 were caused by bat impact. Of the 68 ball impact deaths, 38 came from blows to the chest while 21 deaths were caused by a ball hitting a player's head.
