smoke free bowling tournament

no smoking at the sunset bowling center

Sunset Bowling Center became a smoke-free establishment on July 1. Except for inside the glass-enclosed Turkey Shoot Lounge, smoking is no longer allowed anywhere in the bowling center. And, at a special fun-filled event scheduled for Aug. 5, all of the Bowling Center – including the lounge – will be smoke-free.

On Aug. 5, the bowling center will feature discounted bowling and shoe rental, 50-cent hot dogs, soda and beer, games and other prizes. From 7-11 p.m., the action heats up with Thunder Alley glow-in-the-dark bowling, a live DJ playing the top hits, and a laser light show. As well as the smoke-free celebration, this event will note Sunset’s 20th Year Bowler Appreciation Day, with special prizes for any loyal Twenty-year bowler.

At the event, PHD will offer a quit smoking class for anyone – employees or customers - interested in quitting smoking. The smoking cessation classes will continue weekly for 6 weeks. Attendees at the smoke-free event also will be asked to fill out a survey asking their opinions about smoking in bars, restaurants and bowling centers

Hundreds of Idaho residents die each year from someone else’s tobacco smoke – either secondhand smoke or smoke forced on babies still in the womb. The American Cancer Society says secondhand smoke is the 3rd leading preventable cause of death in the U.S., killing more than 50,000 nonsmokers every year.

Since going smoke-free, the bowling center, at 202 W. Sunset Ave., has posted signs throughout the center, reminding customers of the smoke-free policy. The glassed-in Turkey Shoot lounge will remain a smoking area, except for the Aug. 5 event.

PHD is working with the state Tobacco Prevention and Control program in targeting 18-24 year old smokers with Project Filter. Project Filter is a major branding effort throughout the state that calls attention to tobacco prevention programs funded by the Millennium Fund. The program’s long-term objective is to reduce the number of adults who smoke by about 5 percent by 2008.
