Is this the right way to look after your health and fitness

At this time of the year many people make resolutions to LOSE a few pounds and get healthier.

So what better place to turn TO than the Internet where fitness regimes and exercise programs and tips are dished out by heaping spoonfuls. But is your computer the ideal place to look for a personal trainer?

While Web sites have been serving up fitness tips, lose weight quick plans and selling nutritional supplements since the Internet's inception, online fitness training seems to have became popular only a few years ago when Jorge Cruise, a Mexican-American weight-loss specialist, launched his Web site, www.jorgecruise.com, on the Oprah Winfrey Show in 1998.

He has since become one of the most downloaded fitness trainers on the Internet. Still, while the Internet launched his career, Cruise only became more of a household name after he published a book, eight Minutes in the Morning, and made a large number of Television appearances and infomercials.

Type in "fitness training" in a search engine and up will come any number of companies that claim to have the power to give you the perfect body using their online training methods.

But using the Internet in your quest for a better body isn't always safe, warns Rod Macdonald, general manager of the Canadian Association of Fitness Professionals, based in Markham, Ontario.

"With anything related to coaching or lifestyle training there should be a one on one interaction where you can see the body language and communicate clearly, which you can't do off of a computer," he said. "You can't correct someone's technique by way of the Internet, even with the highest speed access and the client and trainer using Web cameras."

Macdonald says weight training requires proper form and technique; an online trainer can't help "someone if weight gets stuck on the person."

An in-person session would allow a trainer to make instantaneous changes based on seeing someone do one repetition of an exercise, he added.
