Former teachers athletes and coaches enter hall of fame
Anker has won numerous honors, receiving the NFL’s 1st, 2nd, and 3rd Diamond Coach Awards, each based on the highest number of points competing students accumulate. The Eagan Rotary Club in 1995 named her the Eagan Teacher of the Year.
In 2005 the NFL presented her with its most prestigious awards: the Albert E. Odom Coaching Award for the program that has had the most success in national competition and the Bruno E. Jacob Coaching Award, recognizing her as the coach most responsible for a team’s achievement of the Bruno E. Jacob award, which in 2005 went to the Eagan team for competing in the most cumulative rounds at nationals. Active in the training of new coaches, Anker produced “How to Coach” videotapes and served as a presenter at League speech judge training clinics. She judges at section and state speech tournaments and has hosted numerous subsection and section tournaments, twice hosting the State Speech Tournament at Eagan. She’s also a supportive, contributing member of her professional associations. When he entered Anoka High School he was a musician and wrestler, playing in the Anoka High School Jazz Band. Wrestling was a holdover from his grade school days when he took part in the district-wide midget wrestling program. By 9th grade he had become quite proficient in the sport, but he chose Nordic skiing as his high school sport.
He carried the title of Most Valuable Skier for the Anoka High School Nordic Ski Team from 1985 through 1987, the year he graduated. In his sophomore year he came in Tenth at his 1st Minnesota State High School League Nordic Ski Meet. He followed that by taking 1st place the next year, 1986, and again in 1987. Also in 1986, he placed 7th in the 15K freestyle at the Junior Olympics in Soda Springs, California. @ years later he won the same event in Lake Placid, New York.
Bauer’s outstanding record at Anoka High School laid the foundation for greatness yet to come. He went on to become winner of Twelve national ski titles; a 5 time member of the World Championship Nordic Ski team; and a 3 time Olympian. In 1996, after months away from skiing because of illness and injury, Bauer made a comeback at Lake Placid, winning all 4 ski events, becoming only the 2nd skier to sweep the national championships. In 2002 he led the United States Olympic Relay Team to the best-ever finish for an American team, and he received the Finlandia Award for the 2nd time for his role on the United states. Ski Team.
Bauer graduated from Anoka High School in 1987 and attained a B.A. from the University of Minnesota in 1997.
