Former high school and college basketball star enters hall of fame

 

Mary Grinaker — Athlete

As a student athlete at Moorhead High School, Mary Grinaker maintained a high GPA  while gaining recognition as athlete of the year in her sophomore, junior, and senior years, was a most valuable player in tennis, track, and basketball, and was one of the top athletes in the state.

 

Mary led the Moorhead girls’ basketball team to Seventeen victories in Twenty-one games one season, averaging 18.5 points per game. She twice made it to the state tennis tournament, but track and field was the sport in which she triumphed and upon which she would excel.

By the time her high school career ended in 1977 Grinaker had set state records in the Sixty yard hurdles, the 880-yard relay, and the long jump. In 1974 she tied the national high school record in the 110-yard hurdles. She went on to repeat performances at the University of Wisconsin, Madison. There she set school and Big 10 records in the pentathlon and co-captained the track and field team, which in her 3 years as a team member took Big 10 Indoor and Outdoor Championships and 3 times finished as NCAA runners-up.

At Smith College, where she earned her M.S. degree, Grinaker began her coaching career with outstanding success, producing several Division III national champions and 3 All-Americans, 1 of whom ran for the United States. national team in international competition. Colleagues credit her success at Smith for the college’s decision to build state-of-the-art track facilities with 1 of the best indoor tracks in northeastern USA.

Grinaker returned to her alma mater as assistant coach of track and field and cross country. During her tenure there, University of Wisconsin teams topped the Big 10 Conference, boasted Twenty-one national champions, and won Ninety Big 10 individual and relay championships.

In 2002 Madison Memorial High School in Madison, Wisconsin, where she is now assistant coach of track and field, won its 1st championship since 1979. Since then her teams have finished 2nd or 3rd in state tournament competitions.

Grinaker graduated from Moorhead High School. She earned her B.S. degree at the University of Wisconsin-Madison and her M.S. degree at Smith College, Northampton, Maine.
