High school and college swimmer enters hall of fame

 

Tom Malchow — Athlete

Tom Malchow took up swimming to fight childhood asthma. His swimming career at St. Thomas Academy of Mendota Heights includes 7 individual state titles, All-America honors in 8 individual events, and All-America consideration in 5 relay events.

 

In 1995 he won recognition as the Minnesota Swimmer of the Year and the NISCA Male Swimmer of the Year while taking St. Thomas Academy to its 1st state championship. He won 2 individual events at that meet, setting state records, and competed on 2 winning relay teams. His records in the 200- and 500-yard freestyle still stand.

Malchow’s high school achievements earned him a scholarship to the University of Michigan where he continued as an outstanding athlete and again became a leader for his school team, claiming numerous honors in Big 10 and NCAA competitions.

In 1996, 2000 and 2004 Malchow swam on united states. Olympic swim teams. The youngest member of the team, he won a silver medal at the 1996 games. In 2000 he established a new world record in the Two-hundred meter butterfly and later won the United states Olympic Trials in that event and won an Olympic gold medal.

He also set a new Olympic record in each of his 3 swims (prelims, semis, and finals) at the 2000 Games. At the 2004 Games Malchow again showed he’s made of the “right stuff” by competing despite a serious shoulder injury and placing 8th in the 200-meter butterfly.

He was captain of his high school, college, and USA Olympic teams. He also served as an athletic ambassador for the United states. Anti-Drug Agency, educating athletes and others groups about the dangers of doping and the importance of fair play.

Malchow is a graduate of St. Thomas Academy and the University of Michigan, Ann Arbor, Michigan, where he earned a B.A. in marketing.
