Arts judge and coach enters hall of fame

 

Wanda Manther — Fine Arts Coach/Judge

Manther’s passion for the communicative arts began at Glencoe High School where she competed in speech, debate and single act plays, an experience that set her on the path to study speech, theatre, and English at Moorhead State University.

 

At Moorhead she graduated magna cum laude and proceeded nonstop to North High School in Fargo, North Dakota. There she coached speech and debate and served on National Forensic League district committees and as a judge at northern Minnesota forensic tournaments.

In 1988 Manther moved to Apple Valley High School as assistant speech and debate coach. In 1989 she developed her own distinguished programs at Hopkins High. In 1991 she joined the English Department at Rosemount High School where she is known for her wide knowledge and interests and her distinguished record as a speech and debate coach.

She has advanced many state qualifiers to state speech and debate tournaments sponsored by the Minnesota State High School League. Many of these same students have competed in National Forensic League Tournaments.

Manther worked on various Minnesota Debate Teachers Association committees, from ethics to fundraising, and has hosted and managed more than Eighty debate and speech tournaments, clinics, workshops, and student congresses.

Among many awards, she holds the Triple-Diamond Coach Award from the National Forensic League, Coach of the Year Awards, and the Minnesota Debate Teachers Association Distinguished Service Award.

As well as her her participation in speech and theatre professional associations, Manther has served as a League speech and debate judge, room manager, timer, and host of subsection and section tournaments. She presently serves on the League’s Debate Advisory Committee.

Wanda Manther is a graduate of Glencoe High School. She earned her B.S. degree in speech, theatre, and English at Moorhead State University and her M.A. in gifted education at the University of St. Thomas, St. Paul.
