Arts judge and coach enters hall of fame

Dick Stanford — Fine Arts/Public Address Announcer

Dick Stanford has been the man at the microphone for Minnesota State High School League boys’ hockey games since 1976, and at other events since the 1960s, enhancing the enjoyment of high school sports for fans and players.

But Stanford is 1st and foremost a teacher, having taught English and coached speech and debate at Johnson High School in St. Paul in the 1960s. His teams participated in competitions nearly every weekend from October through May. Students he brought to speech and debate competitions year after year, at state and regions levels from the ’60s to the ’80s, were proud to be “Stan's Bananas.”

Stanford was State Speech Tournament manager from 1988 through 1990; workshop coordinator in 1975; District Fifteen Speech and Debate Tournament Manager, 1964 to 1980; a member of Region Four Debate and Speech Tournament Committees, 1964 to 1975; and president of the Minnesota Debate Teachers Association in 1984. Throughout his career he also held workshops and League clinics in speech and debate. He received the League’s Merit Award in 2000.

His career as a public address announcer began in the 1960s when Johnson High opened a new gymnasium. “When they decided they needed a P.A. guy for the basketball games,” Stanford said, “the logical choice seemed to be the speech teacher.

Besides handling the P.A. duties at the state boys’ state hockey tournament since 1976, he has also worked at the state track and field meet, the Prep Bowl, and girls’ state basketball. He announced his 31st state boys’ basketball tournament this past March.

His success at announcing and at building a strong debate and speech program, which remains a model for inner-city schools, is a source of pride and inspiration to Stanford’s former students and colleagues who value him as both teacher and coach.

Stanford is a graduate of St. Paul Central High School. He earned his B.S. at the University of Minnesota.
