CLIFFORD TO COACH PENGUINS

The Pittsburgh Penguins of the National Hockey League (NHL) announced today that Silvertips Goalie Coach, Shane Clifford will be the main goaltending coach for the Penguins Hockey Club. Clifford will begin his work with the Penguins when the club's training camp begins in September.

 

Before arriving with the Silvertips, Clifford coached the goaltenders for the Johnstown Chiefs of the East Coast Hockey League. The Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania native also runs his own goaltending school and works with many goaltenders at the major junior, professional, and college levels. A former IHL and ECHL goalie, Clifford has also been on the coaching panel of the Pittsburgh Forge and Pittsburgh Junior "A" Penguins.

"Over the last five years, every goalie that Shane has coached has been in the top of his league consistently and additionally taken their team to the finals in their playoff," stated Silvertips Director of Hockey Operations and Head Coach, Kevin Constantine. "Shane deserves this opportunity and the Silvertips organization wishes him the best."

Clifford in his coaching career has guided many successful goaltenders at the Junior, College and Professional  levels in the last few years. Recently Clifford coached former Silvertips goaltender Jeff Harvey who led the Silvertips to a U.S. Division and Western Conference title in the franchises first season in the WHL

Last season Silvertips goaltender Michael Wall finished 5th in the WHL in Goals Against, 3rd in Save Percentage, 2nd in Shutouts and 8th in the WHL in Wins. University of Denver netminder Peter Mannino was under the direction of Clifford and led the Pioneers to two straight NCAA titles. Clifford also aided Peter Aubry who guided the Alaska Aces of the ECHL to the National Conference Finals.

The Silvertips will start their 3rd WHL season on Saturday, September 24th in Kamloops and will hold their home game opener at the Everett Events Center on Saturday, October 1st against the Prince George Cougars. Hockey Hall of Fame

While Title IX does leave decisions up to the schools, it also creates an atmosphere where there is an obvious team that will go.  Women’s sports are not cut.  Men’s teams are often cut.  The main reason for cutting the teams is because of numbers.  There are too many males.
