In 1894, the Reverend W.M. Robinson, pastor of the Clinton Chapel A.M.E. Zion Church, and the Reverend Nero Crockett, Presiding Elder of the Yorkville District of the South Carolina Conference of the African Methodist Episcopal Zion Church, founded Clinton Institute.

 

The institution was named in honor of Bishop Isom Caleb Clinton, the presiding bishop of South Carolina, at that time. The Clinton Institute started as a boarding high school, providing high quality education to 100's of newly freed blacks. at the beginning of the Twentieth century, the college became known as Clinton Normal and Industrial Institute, and was authorized to grant state teacher certificates.

Clinton Junior College presently serves as a liberal arts community college. Clinton's stated  major goal is to prepare students to successfully complete a college major at a 4 year institution. The college takes pride in being designated as a Church related, Historically Black Institution of higher learning. In the year 2000, Clinton College was accepted as a candidate for accreditation by the Transnational Association of Christian Colleges and Schools (TRACS).

One of the stated objectives of Clinton Community College is to instill in it's students a sense of ethical and moral responsibility. Collegiate athletics provide students an opportunity to master these qualities.

Clinton Junior College has fielded a men's basketball team for more than Sixty years and a women's basketball team for more than forty years. Students are recruited from schools in SC, NC, GA, US Virgin Islands, and the African continent. The College is a member of the (NJCAA) National Junior College Athletic Assoc.
