COAHOMA COMMUNITY COLLEGE

 

Coahoma Junior College is a comprehensive publicly supported community college situated in the N/W corner of the Mississippi Delta serving the Counties of Bolivar, Tallahatchie, Coahoma, Quitman and Tunica.

 

The school provides accredited, accessible, diverse, affordable and quality learning opportunities for the development of job skills, intellectual skills, personal growth and/or transfer to a baccalaureate program. the College serves as a catalyst for community and economic development and supports creative and aggressive efforts to increase access to education in rural areas.

Coahoma Community College, situated in Coahoma County, Mississippi, approximately 4 miles north of the city of Clarksdale, the school is easily accessible from 4 major highways: U.S. 61, U.S. 49, Miss. 6, and Miss. 1. The 99 acre campus nestles in an agrarian setting along Clarksdale-Friars Point Road close to the Mississippi River, which forms the western boundary of Coahoma County.  The College is bordered on the east by a quiet and picturesque lake, the campus site is conducive to wholesome recreation as well as to serious study.

Coahoma County Agricultural High School was established in 1924, Coahoma County became the 1st county in Mississippi to provide an agricultural high school for Negroes under the then existing “separate but equal” doctrine for education.

The community college curriculum was added in 1949, and the name of the school was changed to Coahoma Junior College and Agricultural High School.

With the approval of the State Board for Community and Junior Colleges and the Board of Trustees of Coahoma Junior College, Coahoma Community College’s name was changed to Coahoma Community College, effective July 1, 1989.
