National Quitline Network To provide the highest level of assistance to smokers across the country that want to quit, this year HHS will establish a new toll-free telephone number that will serve as a single access point to the national network of quitlines. By providing one-easy-to-remember number, smokers in every state will have access to the tools they need to quit smoking.

Princeton University Concerned about the effects of second-hand smoke or passive smoking and following other peer institutions, Vice President for Campus Life Janet S. Dickerson announced she has accepted recommendations from students to prohibit smoking in undergraduate dorms.

Smoking In Restaurants In California, where the country's strictest smoking ban has been in effect since 1995, restaurant sales did not suffer for the industry as a whole or on a per-unit basis. The smoking ban in bars, which started three years later, did not effect sales either.

Women-Improved Lung Function  New findings from the Lung Health Study (LHS) indicate that, in general, women’s lung function improves significantly more than men’s after sustained smoking cessation.

Increased drug use by smokers  Research supported by the National Institute on Drug Abuse (NIDA) has found that craving for nicotine appears to be linked to increased craving for illicit drugs among drug abusers who also smoke tobacco. In addition, scientists say, patients in drug treatment programs may be less likely to successfully stay off drugs if they are cigarette smokers. These are the findings from two studies published this month in the journal Experimental and Clinical Psychopharmacology.

Racquetball: (Aug. 3) The United States swept the individual competition at the 2004 International Racquetball Federation (IRF) World Championships, winning four gold medals. It is the fourth time the U.S. has been able to claim world champions in all disciplines. The feat was also accomplished in 1981, 1992 and 1996. The U.S. is the only country to sweep the individual competition since the tournament’s inception.
