  • Running shoes, more than most other types of shoe,  come with many different types of arch support. Knowing what type of arch the child’s foot has can help in selecting the most supportive and comfortable shoe.

  • For those children who have flat feet or who pronate excessively the use of esthetic inserts can be very beneficial.

  • For injury prevention and comfort, children who regularly participate in a sport should wear shoes that are designed specifically for the demands of that particular sport. IE: Tennis shoes are designed for side-to-side motion, while running shoes are made for forward momentum and have added cushioning.

  • When you go shopping for athletic shoes for young children remember the basics of good fit. There should be a thumb’s width from the tip of the child’s toe to the end of the shoe. The toes should have room to wiggle around freely. The heel of the shoe should not slip off the foot as the child walks or runs.

  • Soccer boots can contribute to heel pain in young children. The small number of cleats in the heel of the shoe can cause increased and excessive pressure on the growth plate of the youngster's heel. Many soccer players between the ages of Nine and Thirteen complain of heel pain that gets worse with side-to-side pressure. Shoes with more cleats at the heel can help to alleviate this problem.

  • Shorter cleats on football and soccer shoes seem to help reduce knee and ankle injuries. For young football and soccer players, cleats should be no more than one-half inch in length.

  • For a general athletic shoe, cross trainers are normally a suitable choice.

  • Shoes used for sports should be examined for signs of wear and replaced when necessary.

  • Correct lacing patterns for shoes is very important. It is helpful to lace through each top eyelet twice to make sure of a more snug fit and to decrease slippage. Children must be careful not to tie their  shoelaces too tight, as this can cause injury to the nerves or tendons on the top of the foot and ankle.

  • If specific uniform socks are required to be worn then it is important to wear those socks when you are trying on new shoes.
