Performance Enhancing Drugs and Their Effects

Casper   The Coalition for Anabolic Steroid Precursor and Ephedra Regulation.

Ephedra  On the basis of new evidence in the medical literature and in adverse event reports, there are reasons for heightened concern that dietary supplements containing ephedra may present a significant and unreasonable risk of illness and injury.

Genetic Doping  Today, the pharmacopoeia of substances banned at the Olympic Games includes not only stimulants, but narcotics, anabolic steroids, beta-2 agonists, and peptide hormones such as EPO (erythropoietin) and hGH (human growth hormone). Last year, the drug company Balco was charged with distributing designer drugs such as the steroid THG (tetrahydrogestrinone).

Olympic Committee Clamp Down  The controversy over drug use in athletics has also led to Senator John McCain offering help from a Legislative level. Major League Baseball and the International Olympic Committee are continuing investigations and seeking out possible reform to existing policies relating to the use of steroids and other drugs.

Steroids used by High School Athletes  Forget Popeye and his muscle-building can of spinach. The world of sport has a whole new menu of performance enhancements wooing athletes from 10 to 25 years of age and older with dreams of record-setting feats.

Testosterone-Female Athletes  "We are not sure why women's testosterone response to competition is so much greater than it is in men. It may be due to the fact that every day levels of testosterone are four times greater in men than they are in women.

Testosterone And Men's Health  "Men with higher testosterone are less vulnerable to high blood pressure, heart attacks, frequent colds and obesity," says Dr. Alan Booth, professor of sociology and human development. "In addition, they are more likely to rate their health as excellent or good rather than fair or poor. Studies show self ratings of health correlate highly with physicians' assessments.

“There could be great clinical significance from these findings,” said Dr. George Vetrovec, chair of cardiology at VCU’s School of Medicine and world renowned for his research on coronary artery disease.  “Everything you do to protect the heart muscle reduces the risk of death and improves the outcome for patients with heart attacks.”
