If you can’t remember your own name, that’s not normal.

Enter John Prigg, a Texas top ranked high school wrestler. John doesn’t know his name, nor those of his parents or sister. If fact, he remembers very little, not even how to read.

Prigg sustained a serious head injury last week while participating in a high school wrestling match in Dallas, Texas. The injury occurred when he hit his head on the gymnasium floor as he tumbled out of bounds.

While bumps on the head are commonplace among wrestlers, total amnesia is exceedingly rare, according to Chicago physician and wrestling coach Nicholas Rizzo.

“Even though wrestlers typically undergo rigorous physical conditioning programs, injuries do occur, although seldom as severe as John experienced,” said Rizzo.

“He will need immediate and extensive rehabilitation to minimize any long-term deficit,” Rizzo added.

Today, the likelihood of recovery remains an unanswered question for Prigg. The longer the period of memory loss, the more severe the problem. In the rare instances where memory loss occurs in wrestling injuries, the recovery period is usually a matter of hours or a few days.

Hopefully, rehab will soon help Prigg recall the names of his family and friends. In the meantime, his wrestling mates will continue to follow a healthy lifestyle, balancing diet and weight control.
